Accommodations and Facilities at Sanbao
The Sanbao Ceramic Working Village is located 3 km outside of Jingdezhen. It is a 10-minute walk from the last village of Sijiali Sanbao. There is twice daily bus service to the village from Jingdezhen. The bicycle ride to town is about 30 minutes. The Sanbao Ceramic Working Village is a self-contained complex with studio facilities and dormitories. A new dining hall and kitchen has just been built. Three meals per day will be provided by the resident cook; the style is Sanbao Village cooking which will be mainly rice and vegetables along with tofu and occasional meat. Tea is available; if you wish coffee then please bring your own coffee grounds - 2 Bodum coffee machines are available.
Sleeping quarters consisted mainly of double occupancy rooms with two beds. You can decide to upgrade to a single room for a fee - it is best to decide this after you have arrived. It is a good idea to bring your own bed sheets (single sheet size) and a pillowcase or two. Bring a towel, or buy one in town. All toiletries can be purchased in Jingdezhen. All rooms have 220V electricity and there is a 220-110 converter for occasional use. Please either bring your own or purchase a flashlight in Jingdezhen - there are occasional electricity blackouts and it is useful for evening walks. There is a swimming hole in the river across the road and in many places to swim outside of Jingdezhen. The washrooms are shared and generally have the following: hot water showers, sinks, mostly western toilets, electricity and light.
The Sanbao studio facilities include a large converted farmhouse with electric and stick wheels and a new studio fully equipped by Shimpo. There are a variety of porcelain, stoneware and sculptor clays available and also a variety of glazes and some glaze materials. There are also outdoor working areas beside the river. There are 2 gas kilns, a small salt-wood kiln, a large egg-shaped Song wood kiln and a 30-meter wood dragon kiln. Sometimes Chinese artists will come out to Sanbao to see what you are doing and also to exchange techniques and ideas. The Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute is at the beginning of town and has over a thousand students involved in the full spectrum of Ceramic programs and technologies - there will be ample opportunity to engage with the students, both as a visitor and also perhaps as a lecturer.
If you are an e-mail addict, you will likely need to frequent the Internet cafes here in Jingdezhen, of which there are many. If you spend the day in Jingdezhen it is very easy to come back in the evening. You can catch a taxi or a motor bike taxi back to Sanbao until midnight.
