Frequently Asked Questions-Domestic Travel Arrangements-Train Service

How does the Train service work?

The train ticket will be waiting for you at the front desk of the hotel. Show the train ticket image I had sent to you, if needed. The day you leave Shanghai for Jingdezhen you will need to grab your own taxi at the corner of the hotel to go to the train station. Leave the hotel by taxi by12:00; the ride should take 10-15 minutes and cost 25 RMB. When you arrive at the Shanghai Train Station, go to the Soft-Seat Waiting Room (look over the large blue signs until you see SOFT SEAT WAITING) and show your ticket to any attendants. You will be taking train #2182 that goes from Shanghai to Yintang and stops in Jingdezhen. The train leaves around 1:15 PM (check the ticket) and loading usually starts 30-40 minutes before leaving.

Your train ticket will have the train number at top right (2182). The next row has the date (year, month, day) and then the time of travel (13:15) and then the CAR # and the BED #. The next row has the price. The soft seat waiting area is on the first floor on the left and is a room of sofas. Make sure the nearest attendant sees your ticket and they will help you get to the right train on time. You will be directed upstairs. There is a large electronic board that lists a moving lists of train numbers - you look for #2182 and see what platform it leaves from – usually 7 or 8. You can always ask and show your ticket.

Loading is usually 20-30 minutes before the train leaves. Look for the red number on the white sign that has the car numbers and get on this train. The bed numbers are on the compartment wall. Bring some toilet paper or tissues with you.

The train leaves around 13:15 and arrives in Jingdezhen around 4:20 in the morning. Some train worker will take your ticket when you are on the train and replace it with a plastic card. You can buy food and bottled water on the train and there is lots of hot water. It is best to buy a package of dry noodles and vegetables in a paper container and add water yourself. Or buy snacks at the shops near the hotel. You will be alerted to the arrival of the train in Jingdezhen as a train worker will give back your ticket in exchange for the plastic card they gave you after you boarded the train in Shanghai. Someone will pick you up from Sanbao at the train station. You may be the only western foreigner on the train. Have a sign with your name on it so you can show who you are.

If, for some reason, no one comes, then use the Chinese text printout to take a 30-minute taxi to Sanbao. You will know you are at Sanbao when you have gone through Jingdezhen and through an open space in the countryside, then a village and then countryside again. Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute is on the left side of the road and is a long red clay wall right by the road. There is a ceramic vase wall structure on the right. There is a Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute sign on the right side of the road. Point the driver to keep going until you see the red wall and the sign. Get out and go through the door at the end of the lane. Bang on the door. Welcome to Sanbao.
