 Program

The 2007 China Sanbao International Printmaking Exhibition and Symposium is the first international printmaking event to take place in China. The international organizer is Jiansheng (Jackson) Li, President of the Jingdezhen Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute and Program Director of the China Ceramic Cultural Exchange.  The 2007 Exhibition and Symposium will be hosted by the Jingdezhen Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute, Shanghai University College of Fine Art, and the China Academy of Fine Art, Hangzhou. The exhibition of international printmakers is being juried by Minna Resnick, artist and printmaker of NY, USA.

Introduction

The 2007 China Sanbao International Printmaking Exhibition, Symposium and Tour offers significant opportunities to build professional linkages. The international delegation of thirty artists will be involved in an exhibition, symposium and tour that will include Shanghai University, the China Academy of Fine Art in Hangzhou, the Jingdezhen Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute for the International Printmaking Symposium, Yunnan Academy of Art in Kunming and other locations as listed on the itinerary. Nineteen of the participating artists are from the United States, with eleven additional artists from Canada, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Slovakia, Australia, Switzerland, Estonia, and Egypt.

The project offers superb opportunities to establish important international linkages, not only with artists and institutions in China, but between the participating artists and their countries. Outcomes could include (but are not limited to) one-person and group exhibitions, collaborative portfolio projects, conference sessions and publications. A color catalogue of the exhibition will be published.  The symposium and exhibition will be the subject of articles in Graphic Impressions, the SGC newsletter and Contemporary Impressions, the journal of the American Print Alliance, as well as professional publications in China.  It is expected that this project will play a significant role in the professional opportunities of the participating artists.

Sanbao Workshop

The 2007 China Sanbao International Printmaking Exhibition, Symposium and Tour is organized by the China Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute at Jingdezhen, which is the premier international ceramic artist residency in China.  Founded in 2000 by Jiansheng Li, the Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute opens the art world to the classical porcelain of Jingdezhen and the thousand year history of Chinese Imperial-ware. This printmaking workshop is the first of its kind in China. It is an exploration of multiple art-making processes and about pushing the boundaries of the artistic self within new environments.

The Sanbao program is intended to provide an atmosphere where Western and Eastern traditions can meet and be a starting point where normal boundaries are erased.  Artists are encouraged

to make use of other skills not common to them, to work in a space outside of their own environment and culture. Sanbao is providing a unique opportunity, in an open atmosphere, for artists to explore new methods and directions.  Artists will send images to the workshop to be made into traditional transfer decals that can be used in conjunction with local ceramic ware, blending and reinventing contemporary Western imagery with traditional Chinese materials.  Additionally, the Sanbao workshop will provide participants with demonstrations of new techniques in brushwork and clay.

The printmaking exhibit will tour to the above three institutions. The symposium will be held at the Jingdezhen Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute on May 26, 2007 at the International Center. The exhibition will open on May 27, 2007 in the Ming town of Yaoli, a heritage site of historical architecture in the mountains near Jingdezhen

In addition to the symposium and exhibition, there will be a travel/work tour program in China that will run from May 18 – June 14, 2007.  This will include a week-long stay at the Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute working with your images in collaboration with local Chinese porcelain pottery masters.  The tour will include travel in the famous Yellow Mountain landscape and a trip to Yunnan Province to explore the art and craft traditions of the ethnic minorities of southwest China.
