Important Security Notice
The Olympic Games has given cause to the Chinese Government to go to a much greater length to provide good security and safety to their visitors during the Olympic year. As such some regulations and rules surrounding foreign visitors have changed. Anyone planning to visit China in 2008 should make themselves aware of the changes.
Visa application policies, security checks and airline luggage policies have been amended to ensure an efficient and safe travel experience to all.
the Beijing Police Department has launched the slogan "Safe Olympic China" in May and will run to the end of October 2008
Entry Visas to China may be limited to single entry and may also be limited to thirty days. Extended stays may have to get special approval. Many times this approval may be given at the local level where the foreigner is staying. Travelers applying for visas must have all their documentation in good order. You should have information on where you will be staying while in China, the addresses of your hosts. You may have to show room reservations if this is the case. Ensure you have round trip tickets and apply for your visa within three months only from your departure date.
During the Safe Olympic China period you may encounter a safety check by the local police force. This is especially true in Beijing. Carry your passport with you at all times and ensure it is secure on your person. One of the first things to do when you check into your hotel is to grab a few business cards showing the name and address of your hotel. Carry these cards with you through out your stay. They also help when you take a taxi back to your hotel.
Carryon Luggage for domestic airlines in China have also changed. Beginning on May 1st all Chinese domestic airlines will limit passengers of business classes and economy classes to one carry on luggage no heavier that 11 pounds. The size of the carry on will also be limited to 20 by 40 by 55 cm. Costs will be incurred for any oversized luggage. The check-in luggage policy remains the same; that is on bag at 50 pounds or less per passenger.
